William A. Coulter (1849-1936)

William A. Coulter  (1849-1936) was born in Ireland to a family of seafaring men and he himself went to sea at age thirteen as a cabin boy. For seven years he worked as a seaman, but a severely broken ankle while on shore leave in Monterey ended his career as a sailor. He settled in San Francisco and started to make a career out of his hobby of marine painting. In 1876 Coulter departed for Europe where he studied his profession for three years, returning to San Francisco in February of 1879. Coulter went on to have a long and distinguished career as a painter of San Francisco Bay scenery.
